Eating black eyed peas on New Year’s Day is a southern tradition. It is thought to bring prosperity in the new year. One legend associating black eyed peas with good luck goes back to Civil War times. Sherman’s army had pillaged the food supplies of southerners on his March to the Sea. However the army left the peas along with pork believing they were animal food. Southerners considered themselves lucky to be left with food to help them make it through the winter.
